Rewalking Our Cities from a Multicultural Perspective (101196425)

amaka is participating in the European project DiverCity Tours (no. 101196425), a program that aims to combat racism and discrimination by promoting a more multidimensional understanding of the cultural influences that have shaped Europe’s national identities. Alongside amaka, the project partners include Jovesólides (Spain) and the Cultural Studies Network (Bulgaria). Drawing on its experience in social inclusion and art therapy, amaka will contribute to enhancing intercultural exchange and implementing activities designed to deconstruct stereotypes about Muslim migrants, fostering respect for and acceptance of diversity.

Project Goals

  • Education and Research: Develop knowledge about cultural diversity and the impact of Muslim culture in the three cities.
  • Combating Xenophobia and Racism: Analyze the relationship between distorted historical narratives and contemporary prejudices against migrants.
  • Public Dialogue and Experiential Learning: Organize interactive tours and events highlighting the shared cultural heritage.
  • Innovative Storytelling Tools: Use gender-sensitive storytelling as a means to redefine history.

The activities of the DiverCity Tours project include:

  • Research on the Muslim heritage of three cities (Athens, Valencia, Sofia).
  • Training of 25 young participants — with a focus on individuals with a migrant background — in tools for intercultural dialogue and experiential storytelling, enabling them to highlight the multicultural heritage of their cities.
  • Creation of interactive city walks aimed at reinterpreting and reclaiming cultural heritage.
  • Training of individuals to take on the role of guides.
  • Guided walking tours in each city (Valencia, Athens, Sofia).
  • An international conference against Islamophobia in Valencia.
  • Development and publication of the guide Muslim Heritage in Modern Cities.
  • Raising awareness and increasing knowledge about Muslim heritage and Islamophobic narratives.

DiverCity Tours is part of the European CERV (Civil Society, Equality, Rights and Values) programme, which aims to promote social cohesion, tolerance, and intercultural understanding by highlighting cultural diversity and combating racism in European cities.
